My Life of Lacrosse

As most of you may have not known, I show great passion towards the sport of lacrosse. Lacrosse can be seen as a hybrid of soccer, hockey and some what of basketball. It isn’t as widely known to the world like soccer or basketball is but is growing quite rapidly. I hope this post spreads the name of lacrosse to a certain point.

I started to play lacrosse after attending my high school which had a lacrosse team. It felt strange to see lacrosse in Korea because lacrosse was known as a minor sport even in the US. Anyways, although it was a bit alien, I am glad that I decided to take a shot at it. Lacrosse is now a part of my life along with music. My passion towards the game becomes stronger each day which pushes me to become a better player and a better teammate.

To be honest, I started lacrosse because the seniors in my school said that it helps when applying to colleges. Of course this had persuaded me to begin playing but as time progressed, I played for the fun of it. I got so into the sport that I decided to play extra through joining a lacrosse club. So, I am currently participating in two teams: my school team and a club team (CLU Tigers). CLU has been the stepping stone to my improvement in lacrosse. It’s a club with not only the people my age but far older than I am also. The club’s age ranges from teens to adults in their 40’s. Since the other club-mates have played longer than I have, it is obvious they have more experience than I do. This leads me to observe what and how they perform on the field and what makes  them a better player than I am. They also answer every question that I have respectfully. I try my best to absorb all this information in to increase my ability. I love these guys because they make me feel at ease even at times when I show my full potential. They show their love and respect for the game and their teammates. It is clear that I have lots to learn from them.

The Korean National Lacrosse League (KNLL) is held all four seasons, all year round. During the Spring and Autumn, a high school league is held for about 3 weeks having games every Sundays. There are only 7 high school teams in the whole country so… it is a small league, you get the picture. It was only 6 teams until last year so it was even smaller back then.

During the Summer the adult league is held and that’s when my other team (CLU Tigers) plays. We have been taking first place for a long time. But then again, the adult league is made up of only four teams.

During the Winter is when indoor league take place. (This is the main reason I am writing about lacrosse today.) This is the time when players can make their own ‘temporary’ teams. This year, I participated as my school team. My team was made up of my schoolmates who have only played lacrosse for less than a year. They were not considered as great nor good lacrosse players. People have overlooked my team completely. But we used that to our advantages. Since nobody has taken us seriously, we were able to pass by them a lot easier winning 2 of 3 games. This led us to go to the finals next week where we’ll play against my other team, CLU. Like I mentioned before, CLU is the best team in Korea to date. They have players that have played lacrosse for as long as I lived my entire life. We kind of have no hope in winning, but you never know unless you try your best, right?

For those who has never played lacrosse before, give it a try. You won’t regret it. And for those who do play lacrosse, Keep Calm and Lax On.

    • Well I live in Gyeonggi and most of the tournaments take place in Mokdong or Yongin. There’s a high school in Choongnam that plays lacrosse but I’m not so sure about Daegu since it’s quite far from where I live. If you’re able to come anywhere near Seoul and play that’ll be awesome.

    Hey Shimmy!
I’m going to KOREA for the summer in less than a week! It’s been 10 years since I last been there! I’m a junior in college and I been playing competitive lacrosse in the states for 6 years. It’s been my dream to explore the awareness of the sport in Korea and do research on it! I would love to talk to you:))
